Everyone has read a story about a burning lithium battery. It almost always goes well, but sometimes it doesn't:
-
Lithium plating : By fast charging at low temperatures (<15 degrees) a kind of crystals are formed in the battery cells. This process can cause the battery to overheat and short-circuit.
-
Short circuit : A dropped battery, design error, or manufacturing error can cause a short circuit.
-
Wrong charger : We have more and more chargers, sometimes with the same plug. It can happen that the battery is charged faster than the battery can handle, resulting in a short circuit.
-
Deep discharge : If a battery is discharged too deeply, it may cause a short circuit during charging.
The only built-in tool to prevent problems is the BMS. BMS stands for Battery Management System. It is not clear who supplied the BMS, how it was installed, and when it intervenes for many battery systems. Elert's alarm is there to solve that problem!
